Where We've Been

In September 2003, the Jewish Community Council of South Australia received a ‘Living in Harmony’ grant from the Australian Government to create a programme known as ‘Project Abraham’.  The programme is an interfaith programme based in Adelaide, South Australia.

The initial project consisted of six seminars held in South Australia.  At the conclusion of that programme, a DVD and a booklet were produced detailing the seminars held.

In 2006, the programme was expanded.  The Steering Committee now consists of representatives of the Jewish Community, the Islamic Community and the South Australian Council of Churches and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (the Department).  The three groups entered into a formal partnership with the ‘Living in Harmony’ initiative to develop a national programme of Islam, Judaism and Christian faiths incorporating regional and country centres.

The project has received the support of the Islamic College of South Australia, Massada College, the Middle Eastern Communities Council of South Australia, Beit Shalom Synagogue, Adelaide Mosque Society of South Australia, Adelaide Hebrew Congregation, Islamic Foundation Australia Incorporated, Jewish Community Services and the South Australian Council of Churches.

The project co-ordinator is Katherine Goode, and members of each community have participated in contributing to the success of the programme.

In 2006, Project Abraham visited Gosford, New South Wales, Shepparton, Victoria, Whyalla, Murray Bridge and Renmark, South Australia, and the Gold Coast in Queensland.  These regions all participated in the programme.

The 2007 programme is a further expansion of an already successful co‑operative effort between Muslims, Christians and Jews.  The Steering Committee exemplifies the aims of the programme.  Members from each faith have worked co-operatively together, and with the Department, to ensure the success of the project.  Members from the three groups have all provided material for the exhibition.  The enclosed booklet has contributors from authors from all states of Australia.
